Just about everyone has heard of hypnosis. Some may know a friend or family member who has tried it. But how much do you really know about being hypnotized? And is it something that can help you? The word hypnosis comes from the Greek word for "sleep." This root makes sense, when you understand that those who are being hypnotized are meant to slip into something relating to a trance. There are many different reasons why one may want to try out hypnosis. Some try it to rid themselves of anxiety, while others use it to help themselves to lose weight or quit smoking. The idea is that the suggestions made take root into the hypnotizee's brain, allowing him or her to be free of food addiction and nicotine addiction. Some who have been hypnotized proclaim that they hardly even feel the need to eat until later in the afternoon, for example. To go even further, some say that instead of craving chocolate and other unhealthy sweets, they craze a much healthier alternative: fruit! Cigarette smoking is the most addictive substance there is. It is no small wonder that people find it so difficult to stop-smoking - it is more addictive than heroin. When you do stop-smoking, you can celebrate each day like it is a milestone. The hypnosis will work subtly. You will not feel that you are hypnotized. The only sensation that you will understand is that you do not want to have a cigarette. This is all done with the power of suggestion and aversion therapy. After being hypnotized, you will find that you do not have the cravings for a cigarette. If, out of force of habit, you got to pick up a cigarette, you will find that you do not want to smoke. In this way, hypnotism helps you to stop-smoking. Once you finally stop-smoking, you will notice a whole new world open to you. No longer will you be relegated to the cold streets when you want to have a cigarette. No longer will you be huddled outside of doorways. You will no longer feel like a social pariah once you finally stop-smoking. The secret is that these habits are made subconsciously, meaning that they hardly even affect your daily life or train of thought. Just like whatever habit or behavior is responsible for you being a smoker or overweight is subconscious, the correcting habits and behaviors will be more effective when they are rooted deep in the subconscious. If you feel as though your budget is too tight to afford a professional hypnotist, there is an alternative: self-hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is when a person hypnotizes his or herself. There are several ways to achieve self-hypnosis. Some use equipment called mind machines that stimulate the visual part of the mind as well as stimulating the audio portion and making the person more hypnosis-ready. After a significant amount of time passes, many who practice self-hypnosis find that they are better and better at reaching the trance-like state-and without the assistance of a mind machine. However, hypnosis is not something to simply dabble in. There are potential risks, as you are somewhat vulnerable when in this trance-like state. This is why you should trust yourself to professionals or be sure to do your research before attempting self-hypnosis.
